YAKUZA SERIES PLAY ORDER FOR NEWCOMERS - PS4/5 - XB1/SX/SX - PC

It's like Dunkey always says - "if you want something done right, you gotta do it all by yourself"
TLDR play order for the mainline series:
  1. Yakuza 0
  2. Yakuza Kiwami
  3. Yakuza Kiwami 2
  4. Yakuza 3
  5. Yakuza 4
  6. OPTIONAL - Yakuza: Dead Souls - NOT CANON TO THE MAIN SERIES STORY
  7. Yakuza 5
  8. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  9. OPTIONAL - JUDGEMENT - HAS REFERENCES TO THE MAIN SERIES BUT ISN'T INTEGRAL
  10. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  11. OPTIONAL - Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise - PURELY SPINOFF TITLE USING GAMEPLAY FROM YAKUZA SERIES
Hey there kyodai, this is the New and Improved "I'm Tired of Seeing This Posted 300 Times a Day" Yakuza series play order post! We haven't had one of these stickied in a long time, and I doubt this one will be, but at least we will have something to link to! Please feel free to link to it as you see fit! This guide covers the titles on all available current/next gen platforms and PC. Yes I know Yakuza exists on PS2 and PS3, nobody cares anymore. This guide is also just in reference to the NA releases and doesn't go into the PSP titles or the JPN exclusives ISHIN and KENZAN. This is to help the influx of new Xbox and PC players. I will update this post as new releases on PS5 and the like become available!
PLEASE NOTE! All physical releases for the PS4 and XB1 will work on new gen PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles.

WHERE TO START WITH THE YAKUZA SERIES
REGARDLESS of what console you play on, the games are meant to be played chronologically. There is the argument that the story is best played by release date and I will refute that statement until my dying breath. Because it doesn't make sense. Why would you play through the series, then go back to 0, a prequel, then BACK to 6, the end? That's dumb. In the same vein, if you want to experience the entire saga the way it's intended, DON'T SKIP GAMES. Just watching the cutscenes leaves sooo much to be desired.
YOU START THE SERIES FROM YAKUZA 0.
0 is available on all platforms and can be had the following ways:
NEXT IS YAKUZA KIWAMI
Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of Yakuza on the PS2. It uses a very similar style to Yakuza 0 combat wise and is about half as long. Kiwami is available the following ways:
AFTER THAT IS YAKUZA KIWAMI 2
Kiwami 2 is a remake of Yakuza 2 originally released for the PS2. This is the first CHRONOLOGICAL game to use the Dragon Engine. The combat is most similar to Yakuza 6 and JUDGMENT. It's available the following ways:
NEXT IS YAKUZA 3
Yakuza 3 was first released on the PS3 in NA and Japan and acts as a sort of soft reboot for the series in HD. Until just last year it was only ever available on disc but now you've got the following ways to grab it:
LOGICALLY, YAKUZA 4 IS NEXT
Yakuza 4 marked the first time RELEASE DATE WISE that you could play as someone other than Kiryu. 4 introduced 3 new protagonists to the mix and can be played the follow ways:
YOU GUESSED IT, YAKUZA 5 COMES AFTER THAT
Yakuza 5 brings us 5, count em', FIVE protagonists and is arguably the largest game in the series (although 7 comes damn close). Until recently, 5 was a downloadable only title on the PS Store but can now be purchased as such:
FINALLY WE END WITH YAKUZA 6
Yakuza 6 is the final chapter of Kiryu's saga and for now is only available:
THE SERIES STARTS ANEW WITH YAKUZA: LIKE A DRAGON
The newest title in the Yakuza series is Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This game features a totally new protagonist and main area to explore, as well as introduces a brand new, turn based battle system. It's a fantastic game and a welcome change to the formula, despite what Reddit would have you believe. Grab it any of the following ways:

And that's it! Feel free to browse but not to carouse!

I ALSO beat 35 Games in 2020 - And I'm gonna talk about them

Inspired by the other currently trending post, I was inspired by the sheer coincidental fact we both completed the same number of games to make my own thread talking about them.
This is the first year I've actually been keeping an active list and tracking what I'm playing and what I'm beating. And I'm definitely going to keep doing it in the years to follow, because it's not only fun but helps me prioritize my time better and give me a great sense of progress. So that's neat.
This list is *mostly* in order but I jump around a lot.
Life Is Strange 2 - I actually forgot that I beat this in 2020 until I went back and checked my trophy list and yep, January 8th, 2020. It has been so long I thought I had beat this before the end of 2019 but nope.
Anyway, I loved this game and found it to be a big improvement over the original, which I also liked but didn't love. I actually loved this story so much I made an entire video about it, which you can watch here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ISwuIQVsEE
After all the hours I poured into that video, not about to repeat myself, lol. I swear I'm not gonna just be plugging videos this whole time.
Specter of Torment / King of Cards - I plowed through both of these expansions to Shovel Knight after going through Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows in 2019. I actually found Specter of Torment a little underwhelming given how much its praised. I liked it, but I didn't think the story was anything super special and while Specter Knight's playset is probably the coolest of the knights, it wasn't by a huge margin or anything. And I actually like Plague of Shadows more than most people because I find Plague Knight's customization and movement to be really fun.
King of Cards definitely has more content than Torment, having an actual map and its own minigame in Joust, which I found pretty fun to beat the optional challenges in. My least favorite campaign is actually the original Shovel of Hope just because I find his moveset the most difficult? Maybe I need to replay it, but I just remember struggling to get through Shovel of Hope whereas I didn't really have that issue with the expansions.
The Messenger - The first half of this game is a perfectly paced, challenging but fair platforming romp with incredibly entertaining and witty dialogue. Not to mention the soundtrack slaps. The second half, while sporting some amazing 16-bit art, isn't as good due to its lack of focus and half-hearted attempts to transform into a psuedo-Metroidvania when the map was only *kinda sorta* appropriate for that. But it's still great and has its own charms. Picnic Panic is alright too. A fantastic game any fan of 2D games needs to play.
The Turing Test - I like Portal a lot. I'm always interested in the many first-person puzzle games that have followed in its shoes. This one definitely scratches that itch but isn't as amazing as say, The Talos Principle... which I really need to finish one of these days. Anyway, The Turing Test has a pretty decent flow to it for most of its run, maybe veering a bit on the easy side for a lot of it but definitely complicated enough to make you think about it and find enjoyment and executing the solution, even if it comes to you fairly quickly. I will say there are some randomly very difficult puzzle chambers that require some batshit logic to figure out, but they are few and far between.
The story is interesting enough to keep your interest but you realize pretty quickly that everyone is a self-righteous prick and that might annoy some people but personally I enjoyed the banter between these flawed perspectives in an impossible situation. I don't think it's *great* but it certainly kept me engaged.
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - Possibly the only good game in the series. Good arcade-y fun with endearing narration and style. Not much else to say, far from a top-tier FPS but if you've got a few hours to kill in the west, this will hit the spot.
Afterparty - From the creators of Oxenfree comes, I think a slightly more palatable romp through Hell. This kind of almost improv-esque writing won't appeal to everyone but I enjoy its sort of... faux-naturalism? It's very witty, perhaps to a fault but I liked it. And I don't think it overstayed its welcome either. If you wanna hear funny dialogue while holding the analog stick forward for a few hours, this is a pretty good time.
Coffee Talk - This game gets compared to VA1 HALL-A a lot but I'm not sure everyone who liked that game will enjoy this one. It isn't as stylish or memorable as its clear inspiration and it's a fraction of the length, but if being a bartender (or I guess a barista in this instance) appeals to you and you just wanna chill out to some lo-fi and listen to peoples's troubles, this is perfectly serviceable. You can plow through this in 3 hours, so its a good palate cleanser between bigger games.
Kunai - I *really* like Kunai and I'm upset a lot of other people on /metroidvania don't. I love its unique visual style (i have no idea how to describe it, it's kinda like if the original gameboy never stopped? But in widescreen? And with more color palates?) and its snappy gameplay. The movement feels really nice and the level design and bosses are good, it's a nice challenge with some fun abilities. It's too linear for me to call it a true MV but as a 2D platformer, I highly recommend it. Also the soundtrack is great.
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir - If you've never played a Vanillaware title, I HIGHLY suggest playing Muramasa Rebirth before this. Odin Sphere is a lot more complex and if you play Muramasa afterward, it might feel disappointingly simplistic. With that out of the way, this was my podcast game of the year. Because the story is entirely contained to cutscenes, it was a great game to chill out with while listening to videos and podcasts, pausing for the cutscenes that bookend every stage.
I played this on my Vita 1000 and it looks AMAZING on the OLED screen. Definitely the way to go. The story is pretty engaging if a bit tricky to follow (I just started 13 Sentinels this week so saying that about Odin Sphere feels almost quaint but hey, it's all relative). I do gotta warn you though that this game is best played in bursts.
I treated each of the 5 campaigns as their own games almost and took significant breaks between them throughout the year because the combat does get a bit repetitive, even keeping in mind that every character plays differently. So I recommend pacing yourself. Thankfully the game is divided into these clear chunks so it's easy to do.
This game is also a huge nostalgia trip for anyone who watched a lot of dubbed anime in the 2000s because a lot of notable names are here. I liked this more than Muramasa for its more engaging story and more complex gameplay but they're both good and worth playing.
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando - Not as good as the first and this is the game that made me realize I should stop playing this series on Vita, not because it doesn't run well, with overclocking it runs pretty good, but just because it's cumbersome to control in this form factor. I'll give more thoughts when I get to UYA below.
Knightin'+ - This is a short and sweet dungeon-puzzler in the vein of Zelda 1 on the NES. No bullshit, just 4 different dungeons to work through, each capped with a boss. I recommend it.
Ruiner - This is a fun and stylish game that really tests your reflexes. The gameplay feels very smooth and the difficulty gets the blood pumping. That said though, since the game is so dedicated to the Akira-esque aesthetic, environments quickly become samey, not providing much variety even within the cyberpunk space. And the story, while bringing up a lot of interesting ideas is too vague and detached to really be invested in. It gets you through the six hour romp, but not much else. Definitely get this for the gameplay and aesthetic.
Persona 5 Royal - I probably could've gone through a dozen other games if I hadn't played this in 2020. It took me about 140 hours to finish my max confidant run. There's more to say about P5R than could ever be fit into this post but I'll try to sum up my feelings.
It's a definite improvement on the original release in every way. I still think that narratively, Persona 5 suffers from some core conceptual issues that the earlier games didn't have and that keeps me from thinking its a masterpiece but that doesn't change that its still a very good and engrossing game.
I actually have a video discussing why I think Persona 5 lacks thematic applicability if you wanna check that out. I wrote it before Royal released in English, but Royal didn't really change much about the games' themes so it still holds up; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8BgEaHAwWI
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - I played the HD re-release on PS3, which was a decent experience apart from the weird audio mixing and a distracting semi-frequent bug where sounds would repeat indefinitely every few rooms until you got far enough away from their source to de-load them. Otherwise it ran at a hard-locked 30fps and was pretty enjoyable.
It was actually very interesting as a long-time Assassin's Creed sufferer (calling myself a fan these days isn't entirely accurate, ha) to see where some of the core mechanics of that series originated.
Sands of Time has a simple story as a framing device for a very balanced mixture of platforming, combat and puzzle-solving. The adventure is well-paced though a bit unambitious, and it ends at a good spot just before it would've worn out its welcome.
Definitely going to be going through the sequels sometime soon.
Streets of Rage 4 - I haven't played this since launch, so the patches might have addressed some of my criticisms but anyway.
For the most part, I love how this game looks, sounds and controls. A very cathartic and stylish beat'em up that recaptures the essence of the era its imitating while modernizing it.
My only complaint is that the difficulty often felt cheap and unbalanced and varied wildly depending on who you playing as. Some characters were just too damn slow and had no real good options for mitigating damage, and trying to play effectively, particularly at higher difficulties meant playing in very unintuitive, restrictive and just plain un-fun ways.
Maybe that's been patched since, idk yet. I hope so.
Mark of the Ninja - This is an example of a game I started previously and just decided on a whim to return to and wrap up. And I really love this game, probably the best 2D stealth game ever made, to this day. And as we'll discuss later, I really enjoy stealth games. Great visual style, very intuitive UI for the genre, the story's kind of an excuse plot but the presentation is snappy enough to make it fun to go through. Have not played the DLC yet, I should probably get on that sometime.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens - The best Shantae game, in my opinion. Although this is coming from someone who enjoyed Half-Genie Hero more than the criminally over-rated Pirate's Curse so you're free to disregard my opinion if you want. Sleek presentation, funny writing, a return to a lite-metroidvania structure. It's fun to figure out how to traverse the map, which has a good variety of environments.
I think it does suffer from the difficulty being a bit too fast-and-loose. Some stuff feels designed to basically do cheap nearly-unavoidable hits just because "hey, the player has a ton of food and healing items so why not". I guess it's more about resource management? But it feels a little unsatisfying at times. But this has been a long-running problem in the series so it isn't exclusive to this game.
It definitely could've been more than it is, but they seem really intent on keeping things simple and light-hearted so it's hard to criticize them for that.
Chaos;Child - I played this visual novel on-and-off over a few months on some friends' recommendation. It is immensely difficult to discuss without spoiling it and I have a lot of nuanced thoughts, both positive and negative. I would definitely say it is a notable and interesting experience that has more pros than cons, so give it a shot if you're prepared to have your brain broken.
Death Come True - As the world's biggest Danganronpa fan, I am obligated to experience everything Kazutaka Kodaka works on, so here we are. This is definitely him watering himself down for the masses, but it still results in a decent product. Death Come True is an FMV game, weird as that might be in the modern era. I almost feel more comfortable talking about it as a film than as a game, because as a film I actually think it's pretty decent especially in the production and cinematography. It's definitely overpriced for what it is (you can beat this and see all bad ends in easily about 3 hours), but if you see it on sale, definitely worth checking out.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Huge step-up from the original game. More to see and do than just basic platforming, incorporating a lot of proper MV elements. I still feel it's too linear to be a *true* MV and a lot of the side content doesn't have really meaningful rewards but atleast that stuff is *there* as a fun distraction.
The artwork and music make for an almost transcendent experience. It almost makes Blind Forest feel like a tech demo. The artists employed by Moon Studios are so goddamn talented. I'm definitely on the watch for whatever they do next.
While I'm not as big into the narratives of the Ori series as some people (I think it's mostly carried by the cathartic presentation and emotional pathos, which is fine but some people talk about it like it's way more than it is and I just have to shake my head), these are absolutely a pair of games anyone fan of 2D needs to experience.
Halo CE Anniversary - I'm gonna be brutally honest... I think this might be one of the weakest games I played this year. I had never experienced the Halo franchise before, being a playstation guy, but when my brother left his Xbone with me over the summer, I decided to, well number one, buy Will of the Wisps, but ALSO pick up a used copy of the Master Chief Collection and see what the series is all about.
Halo CE... it has its moments but man, all I remember is just being consistently frustrated by random difficulty spikes, weirdly placed checkpoints, repetitive levels that were aggravating to navigate because of their lack of distinct landmarks. And some levels just absolutely starving you of ammo, causing you to need to just run past everything hoping you hit a checkpoint before you're killed.
I don't understand why this game is so revered, it's so incredibly average to me. Like this is a pretty flat 5/10.
That said...
Halo 2 Anniversary - A MASSIVE improvement. Fixes it pretty much every issue I had with the first. Better level design, better combat flow, less getting hopelessly lost, better checkpoint system, more interesting story. And the anniversary glow-up makes the game feel practically modern, especially those gorgeous cut-scenes.
There were a *few* troublesome sections and as I'm pretty sure everyone in the world knows, the ending is infamously abrupt, but overall, a much better experience than CE. I'm looking forward to playing Halo 3 in the near-future.
Superliminal - Definitely a unique game that manages to really capture the feeling of being lost in a dream. Sometimes I'd even forget I was awake while playing this, it was that convincing at times. Check this out if you want something experimental. It's just the right length too, bailing out before the gimmick got old.
Carrion - A good game, but a bit of disappointment, I think. I dunno, I guess I just assumed this would be more of a metroidvania from the trailers but the reality is that its a pretty linear affair moving from one area to the next, each new room something of a puzzle to figure out. There's a lot of catharsis to be had from being the monster in a horror film, but the novelty does wear off eventually.
What holds this game back is that its sometimes very confusing to navigate, since it lacks any kind of map, and that it sometimes feels like you never get to truly play around with your abilities, every upgrade you get is more to circumvent an obstacle than provide new fun toys to play with and that kinda deflates the fantasy a bit.
But the atmosphere is really well done, when you're in a groove, I don't know that any other game has succeeded in making you feel as vicious and unstoppable as this one. If you've ever fantasized about being a forty-foot long glob of biomass chomping on scientists for breakfast, this is the game for you.
Psychonauts - Where has this game been all my life, I love it. So weirdly at some point during the summer, this game was accidentally made free on the Xbox store for like a day. I managed to snag it during that period and I almost feel bad for not paying for it because damn is this game fantastic. So great I made a whole video to talk about it, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AvY19p0v6s
Psychonauts 2 is one of my most anticipated releases of 2021, it can't come soon enough.
Styx: Master of Shadows - I actually tried this game about a year and a half ago and I dunno what it was but I just wasn't really feeling it at the time. I didn't get very far in before quitting. On a whim, I decided to start over and try again and Idk what my problem was before because the game immediately clicked with me.
This is a pure stealth game, getting caught isn't game over in most circumstances but depending on how exactly you were caught, you might as well reload because fighting your way out isn't a great option. Styx is half the height of the guards and while he can fight off one, maybe two of them if he's lucky, any more than that and they'll quickly bash his skull in.
Master of Shadows takes place exclusively in one big location that Styx sneaks his way into and then has to sneak his way out of it. This naturally means that the latter half of the game is mainly comprised of earlier levels, but played in reverse with some alterations. While this makes logical sense with the plot, it does come across a little bit like padding.
I personally didn't mind it that much since again, it does make sense and the increased familiarity with the level layout lets you more effectively traverse it. But it's definitely a notable annoyance some people have with the game.
The biggest issue I had, playing this on base PS4, was the loading times. As a pure stealth game, you're gonna be reloading saves a lot. It's part of the genre, it's what you do. But holy fuck, this game is gonna really test your patience. Now, to be fair, I had this installed on my 5400rpm external HDD. Which is slower than the PS4's internal 7200rpm drive, so that probably added unnecessary frustration that could've been avoided on my part if I thought ahead a little, but like I said, I returned to this game on a whim.
But in my experience, loading screens took anywhere from 25-40 seconds. Every single time. And depending on your skill level or just how much you wanna experiment, you could be reloading dozens of time per level. This adds up. I think the game is worth it despite this annoyance, but make sure to keep your phone handy because you're gonna have a fair bit of down time with this one.
Styx himself is a really enjoyable character that actually goes through a pretty satisfying arc over the course of this game. The world he inhabits seems really stock at first but it actually has some pretty imaginative takes on staple fantasy tropes. I'll talk about that more later, because spoiler alert, I went through every game featuring him this year, but suffice it to say that Master of Shadows is definitely something any stealth fan should check out, even if its rough around the edges.
Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit! - I feel like this game got lost to time. A 7th gen downloadable title that never quite made the headlines as far as I remember. I had always been fascinated with this game so I decided to give it a go after I installed a bigger, faster HDD in my PS3. And I gotta say, it's a fun time.
The setup is that you're Ash. Prince of Hell. The paparazzi snaps pics of you playing with a rubby ducky in the bathtub so now you need to kill the 100 monsters it was sent to before your embarrassing pics get leaked and ruin your reputation. If you've ever played Disgaea, the tone is kinda like that except without the actual serious storyline that creeps up on you through all the meta-humor and irreverence.
So yeah, in this game you gotta hunt down 100 monsters. They're spread through several different levels and each one has some kind of trick to killing them. Many of them also have brief amusing anecdotes to exchange with Ash, which are all a joy. The visuals aren't the highest resolution, but the artstyle is clean, sharp and vibrant and the soundtrack is surprisingly catchy.
The controls admittedly take a little getting used to but once you do, there's nothing really wrong with them, they're just a little unusual. If you enjoy quasi-metroidvania titles, this might be a hidden gem. There's little else like it. It's a very amusing game from start to finish.
Shadow Warrior 2 - I enjoyed the Shadow Warrior reboot quite a bit, rough around the edges though it was, but I held off on this one for the longest time because the idea of a shooter like this being procedurally generated didn't sit well with me. But I gotta say, it actually works pretty well.
The visuals look great and the gunplay is quite a bit smoother than the first game. The Borderlands-style loot system, I mean, I could've done without it but it has its charms. I enjoyed modding weapons with different effects and such. Some of the weapons are really badass looking and fun to use.
The story isn't as good as the first, largely because Kamiko, while an appreciably different companion than Hoji, doesn't have quite as enjoyable a rapport with Lo Wang. And I know the dialogue is really divisive in this reboot series, but I personally love it. The irreverence, the energy, it's great.
Now the procedural levels *mostly* work, but there were a few occasions where I'd see stairs that lead to nowhere or objectives that were kind of obtuse to figure out how to reach, but it wasn't the dealbreaker I assumed it would be. And I can't speak to how frequent the little issues are, because again, procgen. You might have a flawless experience, someone else might get a really weird buggy one, who knows.
Excited for Shadow Warrior 3. I actually don't know if the procgen levels are returning for that one, can anyone confirm?
Thomas Was Alone - So I actually wanted to play Volume because I was kind of on a stealth kick but figured, hey, why not play Mike Bithel's earlier game first? So I did, the puzzle platformer, Thomas Was Alone. A *very* engaging and brilliantly paced story about differently shaped colored blocks.
The narration makes this game. Like the levels are good and all but the added context makes going through level after level way more engaging. I'm actually really jealous of Bithel for coming up with this ingenius trick. Wish I'd thought of it first. Haven't yet played Benjamin's Flight though, I'll get around to it eventually.
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal - A good time. I switched to PS3 for this one and I'm glad I did because it felt a lot better to control than on Vita. This is the weakest of the 'trilogy' in my opinion and I feel like I can just recommend Gaming Brit's video on it to perfectly encapsulate why. I pretty much agree with everyone he says. Good game, but has a lot of weird drawbacks probably owing to its rushed production.
Jak & Daxter - So I was kinda trapped in World of Warcraft during most of the sixth console generation so a ton of classics of that era past me by. That's why I've been gradually catching up with them through the HD collections on PS3. And this was a super enjoyable platformer.
I find it really interesting how this game is a more accurate successor to Super Mario 64 than any actual Mario game that came later. Not even A Hat In Time fully replicates the design of these games despite aping a lot of their style. (AHiT almost made this list but I did finish it in 2019).
There's some uneven difficulty spikes here and there but for the most part, I had a smile on my face the entire time I went through Jak & Daxter. Definitely going to go through Jak 2 soon, which I hear is really difficult, hopefully it doesn't turn me off from it.
Yoku's Island Express - A metroidvania-lite controlled ala pinball should not work as well as it does. This game is short, but a very fun and unique experience. You haven't played anything quite like this before. Now, admittedly, sometimes the pinball navigation makes it a little more challenging to figure out how to reach certain locations and it can make backtracking a little more involved than you'd expect, but otherwise, a good time all around. My only complaint is that by the time you can get stuff to customize your ball... the game is basically over. That kinda sucks.
Of Orcs And Men - This is the RPG that Styx originated from before Cyanide decided he should be the star of his own stealth series, which might be the wisest decision anyone's ever made. The existing Styx games are actually prequels to this game. I actually imported this from France since it never got a physical release in North America. Was it worth the $24 I paid for it? Well, for collection's sake, yes but as a game? It's pretty mid.
This game was actually primarily developed by Spiders, yes *that* Spiders. The notorious eurojank RPG factory who didn't get much of any real acclaim until their latest game Greedfall. And this is them *pre-Bound By Flame* just to give an example of the timeline.
Of Orcs And Men is a very strange affair. The world it presents is interesting but doesn't get expanded upon much. The strongest part of the game is the dynamic between Styx and Arkail, which is legitimately good and makes me wish for the big lug to get his own game at some point, maybe a God of War style hack'n'slasher? I dunno.
The gameplay is fairly clunky and unbalanced. There is some joy in figuring out how to effectively control both characters at once and strategize through the game, but not only does the adventure feel unpolished, it feels outright unfinished.
The game *claims* to have 5 Chapters, but really it has maybe 2 and a half in actuality. The first two chapters are fairly fleshed out with multiple missions, a number of sidequests and give the impression of a grander RPG than it ends up really being. Chapter 3 is basically a bunch of cutscenes, a short dream sequence and a quick escape sequence. Chapter 4 takes place on a really cool looking island but it's essentially one slightly-longer-than-average level. And than Chapter 5 is a dashing sprint to the finish line, fighting your way up two floors of a tower before the final boss fight.
It really gives off the impression that Spiders had much bigger plans but just ran out of money and had to scramble together than second half of the game. I've never seen a game rush to an ending like this before. There's also features that feel kinda pointless, like the equipment. There's... barely any of it. Lot of the time you'll talk to a new trader and they just have nothing new to sell you, it's so bizarre.
There's some heart to the writing, which carries over into Styx's own games. But you don't *really* need to play this to understand the Styx games, and even if you're curious, I'd recommend watching a Let's Play or something. It isn't the worst, but it's a very mediocre game overall.
Shadow Complex Remastered - I decided to plow through this after hearing it wouldn't be compatible on PS5 for whatever reason... not that I'm getting one anytime soon because the US government won't give adult dependents stimulus checks but whatever. Anyway, this game is good. Shorter than I expected it to be, honestly, but I see why it became a hit in the early XBLA days.
My only real complaint is just that shooting at enemies in the background is really finnicky, which is everyone's complaint about this game. Otherwise, pretty solid Super Metroid clone.
Tokyo Xanadu EX+ - Another game I started on a whim. I'll just start by saying that if you've never heard of this game, that the promotional artwork is WAY more epic and edgy than anything in the actual game. It's borderline false advertising.
I'd never played a Falcom game before and rather than dive headfirst into the massive Trails series, I figured this standalone game would be better. All in all, I liked it, enough to finish it, which took me about 65 hours. But be warned, it is exceptionally anime. This might be the most anime game to ever anime.
By which I mean, it's pretty standard fare stuff. I did grow to like the characters, but none of them are especially complicated people. The game is so easy-going it's difficult to feel a sense of tension even when there's clearly supposed to be. If you go into this expecting Persona, I think you'll be a little disappointed. It just isn't that good, it plays itself too straight and too safe.
They should definitely make another Xanadu game though. I think a new game with a different cast and more ambition poured into it could be really good. As it stands, this game *is* decent, but can I really recommend you pour 65 hours into something that's just "alright"? That's a hard sell, I think.
What I did find interesting about this game is its design. Instead of long, arduous grindy JRPG dungeons, the game plays more like an arcadey brawler with short stages that you're encouraged to speedrun your way through. It doesn't overcomplicate itself, and I found it a joy to plow through because of that.
Also Hazy Moon might be the best track I've heard all year, give it a listen.
Styx: Shards of Darkness - I was actually going to save this for later but I got a new display and figured, what the hell, right? This game is a BIG improvement on Master of Shadows, basically everything about that game that didn't work was either improved or removed. The janky old engine is gone, replaced with a pretty-looking and slick-feeling UE4 game.
The gameplay is smoother, the level design is better, but the biggest improvements are quality of life stuff. This game reloads VERY quickly, even on PS4. I'm talking about 7-10 seconds, it's good stuff. The menus are snappier, you can actually see your progress in the various challenges rankings as you're playing the level, no longer restricted to the results screen.
I felt compelled to replay levels immediately after beating them to experiment with new abilities or go for different challenges and I can't say that about a lot of games. This is a stealth classic.
The big thing fans debate about this game is the different direction they took Styx himself. While he doesn't do it constantly, he now seems keenly aware that he's in a video game and routinely makes meta jokes and breaks the fourth wall. After two fairly straight-laced games, this is a little jarring but I actually don't really mind for two reasons.
  1. It is MOSTLY contained to the death screens, which mock the player ala the Arkham series.
  2. As far as I recall, Styx NEVER breaks the fourth wall when talking to other characters, only in his internal narration during gameplay, which keeps it between him and the player, so to speak. The actual storyline is not derailed by the existence of this Deadpool-esque humor.
Shards of Darkness does end on a bit of cliffhanger, so I'm really hoping for a third game. Arkail even makes a brief cameo in this one, which makes me think Cyanide might not be done with him either. They seem pretty busy with other projects these days, but one can dream, right? I'm glad I gave this series another shot because Styx is awesome.
---------------------------
*phew* And THAT is the 35 games I beat this year. There were other games I spent substantial amounts of time in but I won't discuss them since I haven't beaten them yet. (Games like SMT IV, Yakuza 0, Dicey Dungeons, the MediEvil remake, Hades, and Ghostrunner).
Currently, I'm going through the Destroy All Humans! Remake and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, both of which I'm enjoying immensely. There's a LOT of stuff I'm looking forward to in 2021 which will be a struggle to balance with the backlog. My most anticipated games atm are Hollow Knight: Silksong, Psychonauts 2 and Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. But there's like fucking 20 Metroidvanias planned for release this year which makes me nervous as that genre is my obsession.
Lemme know what you thought of any of these games. I'm definitely going to keep keeping track of my progress so I might make more posts here in the future.

Graphics Quality Ranking of games available for the Xbox Series S

\Will be updating this post as I go through more of the Game Pass catalogue. But please, note it's only my opinion and you might see it differently. Video links are provided if you click on the titles for you to judge them yourselves.*
Just thought I would share my ranking of the graphics quality of the Xbox Series S games:
Poor: Low res textures made it so ugly, it's unplayable!
OK: Playable but low res textures are noticeable but acceptable

Good: Not updated for Xbox Series S but still looks good or designed for Series S/X but forgot about the S.

Excellent: Punching above its weight or designed for Xbox Series S in mind.
Excellent Xbox 360 Back Catalogue Games: with Auto HDR and upgraded textures, some of these games have been transformed by the Xbox Series S!
OK Back Catalogue Games: those that look quite dated but worth playing to relive memories
Indie Games on the Big Screen: these games do appear on mobile apps but they really are quite different on the big screen! You should try them out!

I spent 2020 laid off. These are the games I beat and my thoughts

Many of these games have been out for longer than 6 months at the time of writing. Any game that hasn't been out for that long I have omitted from this list.
Disney Aladdin (Xbox One X) - I picked this up physically for Xbox and it really brought me back to being a kid. I tried my hardest to beat it without the rewind feature. Even though it took me a while, I finally got through it. I know you don't HAVE to use the rewind feature, but I think it should have been omitted completely.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey (Xbox One X) - I gave a review on this sub earlier this year. I have a love/hate relationship with this game. While I was completely addicted to it, I feel like it was for the wrong reason. I liked the story and game play, but felt like it was way too easy after a while. The DLC, as awesome as the story is, is extremely tedious. So, I loved the game, but didn't at the same time? If that makes sense. I put in 165 hours into it.
Bloodstained Ritual (Xbox One X) - This is the last game I beat before getting the news that I'd be laid off for "eight weeks" back in March. I couldn't stop playing this. I never played Symphony of the Night and when I dabbled in that game I didn't care for it. I absolutely loved Bloodstained though. It makes me want to go back to Symphony of the Night. The game play, soundtrack and overall level of things to do was a blast.
What Remains of Edith Finch (Xbox One X) - I beat this in one sitting, but it really captivated me. Sure, it's a walking simulator, but the writing is outstanding. I would recommend this to everyone.
Catherine: Full Body (PS4 Pro) - I was a big fan of Catherine on the 360. I was super excited that they were remastering it for PS4 and it included an expanded story. I even pre-ordered the collector's edition. It's one of my all time favorite puzzle games with hilarious writing. I'd recommend the remaster over the original, despite it being a PS4 exclusive.
Gato Roboto (Xbox One X) - Found this on Game Pass and thought I'd give it a try. Very fun metroidvania that had me laughing in spots due to how ludicrous it is. Your character is a cat that is in an armored mech suit. Your captain is stranded and you must save him. Very fun game. I'm unsure if it's still on Game Pass, but definitely on Steam.
Hyperdot (Xbox One X) - Another Game Pass game that wouldn't let me go. I'm a sucker for these simple games and all you have to do in Hyperdot is dodge everything. It seems simple, but gets really tough after a while. It was very rewarding when I beat it.
The Uncle Who Works for Nintendo (PC) - I co-host a horror movie podcast and we were talking about horror video games one episode. I decided to talk about this text-based browser horror game. It was a little glitchy in parts, but I thought it was very entertaining. The plot is that you're a kid who is spending the night at a friend's house and get word that the friend's uncle is stopping over and he works for Nintendo. It's pretty awesome and offers a few different endings.
Fractured Minds (Xbox One X) - Another Game Pass game. It's an easy 1k if you care about achievements and offers a somewhat decent look at depression and anxiety in video game form. It's not bad, but doesn't offer that much either. Very very short, as in 30 minutes-an hour.
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox One X) - So, this may upset people, but even though I co-host a horror movie podcast, my anxiety does NOT bode well with horror games. I panic and end up giving up. That's why Resident Evil 5 is my favorite entry in the franchise. My best friend is a horror game nerd and frustrates her when I talk about how good RE5 is. I technically beat this game more than any other game recently because my like-minded buddy and I fully completed all the achievements for single player and DLC in couch co-op. It was a blast finding all the jewels and weapon upgrades. Too bad the multiplayer isn't active or else we would have gotten those achievements too. Sure, it's more action oriented than it's horror predecessors, but my buddy and I dig that. The game play is a blast.
Halo Reach (Xbox One X) - The Master Chief Collection is so awesome. My friend and I made a plan to run through all the Halos again on Legendary. Halo is my favorite game franchise and I have beaten these games a million times. Love couch co-op obviously. Halo Reach has a fantastic story that I'm sure you all know enough about.
Afterparty (Xbox One X) - I am really glad this hit Game Pass. I really loved the writing in Oxenfree, so was stoked about a game that takes place in Hell this time. It was very comedic and oddly buggy in spots, but I had a really good time. The drinking games and descriptions of all the Hell cocktails were hilarious.
Maneater (Xbox One X) - I knew I had to own this game as soon as I heard it was a shark rpg. It's exactly what you think it is. You eat fish to get stronger and eventually move on to people. I don't like how the "wanted levels" are so easily accessible though. You eat like three humans and people are immediately after you. The story is fun and is voiced by Chris Parnell. It also received the Xbox Series X upgrade for free, so check it out!
Halo 3 (Xbox One X) - Another legendary Halo checked off for this year. I love how many achievements are tied into the Master Chief Collection. It definitely warrants multiple playthroughs of Halo just for some off the wall stuff to complete. Excellent, excellent game.
Pokemon Sword (Nintendo Switch) - So, I love the Pokemon series dearly. In my Pokemon bank on my 3DS I caught every single Pokemon up until this new generation. I was one of the few that actually black balled this game because I do not like the direction Game Freak went in. It's been going down hill for a generation or two, but them omitting Pokemon out of this new entry was what crossed the line for me. I borrowed it from a friend so I didn't have to purchase it. Unfortunately, the addiction of collecting Pokeman came back in full force. I ended up nabbing Pokemon Home for the monthly fee anyway. I beat Pokemon Sword and transferred all my Pokemon over. It's neat seeing them in the updated graphics. I do like the designs of the new Pokemon, but Game Freak just sucks now imo. Pokemon Sword was so easy. It was insulting how easy it was. Sun and Moon had this overly long introduction that I was hoping Sword and Shield wouldn't. Turns out the whole game felt like an introduction. I used all new Pokmon, none from my bank, and it was just a joke. It had fun game play, but waaaaay too easy.
Ghost of Tsushima (PS4 Pro) - This game is hitting the 6 month mark in just under two weeks, but I'm going to talk about it anyway. This is my game of the year, hands down. It's gorgeous and has a compelling story. I have seen people bash on it a bit, but it's simple and the voice acting really brings it home. I'm a subs type of guy, so having the voice actors actually speaking Japanese and reading the subs on the bottom really heightened the experience for me. Excellent game and my favorite.
Double Kick Heroes (Xbox One X) - I am a huuuuge fan of the guitar hero/Rock Band series. Seeing a game where a bunch of metal heads are trying to fight Satan himself in an apocalyptic future was a no brainer for me. It's a rhythm game that unfortunately can only be controlled by a controller and not a guitar. It was a lot of fun, but my Rock Band controller didn't work. The songs were pretty good too.
Halo ODST (Xbox Series X) - This is my least favorite Halo. I have beaten it 3-4 times and still can't tell you anything about the game. The game play is still a boat load of fun, but it's insanely short and doesn't offer much story wise. I am thankful it was added for free to the MCC though.
Army of Two (Xbox 360/Series X) - My RE5 buddy and myself sat down and decided to play Army of Two. Neither of us have dabbled in it and were both surprised how much fun we had while playing it. Very enjoyable couch co-op game. I'm hoping the other games in the series are equally as good.
Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch) - I own this on my SNES, but it's on Nintendo's online subscription service. I thought what the hell and ran through it again. Donkey Kong was my favorite game growing up and I have beaten this game an astronomical amount of times. My buddy was getting on me for never having played DK 2 or 3, so I decided to restart the franchise and dominate one of my all time favorite games.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch) - This is my first AC game. My friend always talked about it and she really took care of her animals. I surprised her with buying it in April shortly after release. I was hooked on that for a long time. There is no real "beating" this game, but I did get my island to 5 stars. I don't play it every day like I used to, and my villagers are very upset with me about that (some taking offense), but I still sink in a few hours per week when I can. Very relaxing game in a very stressful year. It is appreciated.
Now, I'm going to talk about the games I attempted, but didn't care enough to finish or just didn't get a chance to
Doom Eternal (Xbox One X) - I feel like I am the only one who didn't like Doom Eternal. It was honestly too hard for it's own good and the puzzle were just in the way half the time. I don't judge anyone who thinks it's fun, but I just suck at this. Doom 2016 is one of my all time favorite fps', but this was a huge step back for me. I am on the second to last level too and have no urge to go back. Now that I have the Series X though, I may attempt it again to see if I enjoy it.
Days Gone (PS5) - After getting my PS5 I had no games for it. I am not a Souls guy, so I didn't pick up Demon Souls. After hooking it up and rummaging through the OS I found that Playstation has many of their AAA exclusives on there for free. I always heard decent things about Days Gone. I didn't hate the game, but also didn't get too far. It was a solid time waster for the few hours I played it, but overall it didn't hook me like I hoped it would.
Yakuza 0 (Xbox Series X) - I'm glad this is on Game Pass because it introduced me to the Yakuza series after ignoring it for the longest time. It is a very, very, very fun game that I put in close to 100 hours into. However, I couldn't finish it because I was way too burned out. All the grinding in businesses became a chore and I never wanted to pick it up. Even though I put 100 hours into it, I'm only slightly over half way. This is my own fault for focusing on stuff besides the main story, but I just can't bring myself to finish.
Rage 2 (Xbox One X) - This is a game I'm going to come back to. I loved what I played, but other stuff came out and I just haven't gone back to it yet.
Persona 5 Royal (PS5) - So, Persona 4 is one of my all time favorite jrpgs. For whatever reason, I waited a very long time to play Persona 5. I preordered the collector's edition of Persona 5, but just didn't play it. I then heard the Persona 5 Royal was going to be a thing. So, I preordered the collector's edition for that too lol. I then sat down and put in around 130 hours into it over two play throughs. I'm on the second to last palace and if I had beaten it by now then I would say this is my GOTY. The first play through I was kind of breezing through so I restarted it on a new save file to play it on a harder difficulty. Such a fan game.
Donkey Kong Country 2 (Nintendo Switch) - My buddy has been hyping the game up for years, trying to get me to play it. I'm not against playing it, but I just haven't had the chance to. I'm going to be 33 next month, so I definitely grew up with DK, but for whatever reason I skipped the sequels. Very fun so far though, even though he's being a little "gatekeepy" with me having to find all the secrets. I'm just going to beat it to shut him up lol
If you got through all this, thank you! It's been a very stressful year for me and these games have been a literal life saver. I'm hoping 2021 is better in many aspects. If it's not, then I only have entertainment to keep me occupied. Have a good year everyone.

Can i (Temporarily) Skip Yakuza 6 and Go from 5 to LAD?

Hello, as the title says, i have played yakuza 0 to 4 and about to finish 5, I played the Remastered Collection on a borrowed PS4 of a friend and was going to buy 6 on his PS4 as well, but everything changed now that 3-6 are coming out on PC, especially the fact that they release on Xbox Game Pass (which I own) the problem is that i want to play LAD but i don't really want to wait until the end of march for 6 to release on PC (I don't want to buy 6 on my friend's PS4 because he needs it back and buying a full game for 3 months is not something i want to do), Obviously I'll play Yakuza 6 when it releases on PC eventually.
tl;dr: I want to play yakuza LAD but don't really want to wait for 6 to release on PC in 3 months, can i skip it until 6 releases on PC and play it then?

[PC] Yakuza 3-5 Dualshock Button Prompts

Hello Kyodais,
I just recently purchased the Yakuza 3-5 Remastered Collection from steam, however when I launch the game I am getting the Xbox button prompts ingame, despite me using a PlayStation Dualshock 3 controller.
Does anyone know if there is any way to get the PS button prompts, or the only way would be to wait for a mod to come out (as was the case with Zero, Kiwami and Kiwami 2). I rarely use controller, and all my life I used a PS scheme and it would be hard for me to learn the Xbox controller scheme and play on the hardest difficulty (like I do with all yakuza games)

My 2020 in Gaming (Bandwagoning Intensifies)

Some notes:
JANUARY
Yakuza 5 (PS3): My entire December 2019 was devoted to Platinuming this game. It was a miserable, miserable experience, much more so than other games I played in the franchise. It is my least favorite Yakuza so far. The side activities are stretched incredibly thin and the plot, especially near the end, is a joke.
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (PS4, The Nonary Games): Nothing much to say here. Great VN/puzzle game! Would recommend for fans of games like Danganronpa and Phoenix Wright.
The Stanley Parable (PC): I did a few endings back in the day, I went back and did the rest when cleaning up my Steam library. Nothing much to say here. You all know what it is.
Bomb Chicken (Switch): Fun puzzle/platformer. Worth a look if you want a quick play and a good laugh.
FEBRUARY
Rise of the Triad (2013, PC): I really wanted to like this game. It hit this absurdist video-game-y retro note that was right up my alley. Unfortunately it's a giant glitchy mess and I had to fight the game a great deal to stop it corrupting my save data and even be able to complete it. Would recommend a fixed version, but cannot recommend as-is.
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (PS3): I don't know why I played this. It's not good. Don't.
MARCH
Yoku's Island Express (Switch): Equal parts fun and frustrating. It's a really original concept (Metroidvania mixed with pinball), with great personality and charm. Unfortunately, the pinball aspects don't always mesh great with the Metroidvania ones, and there were many times where I was flying all around a map and unable to figure out precisely where I wanted to go. Good, and very cozy, but not great.
Dead or Alive 6 (PS4): I had high hopes for this given how much I enjoyed Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate/Last Round, but very little was improved and it seems to exist primarily as a vehicle to sell cosmetic DLC. Do not recommend.
Kunai (Switch): My favorite underdog title of the year. I discovered it by chance and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Metroidvanias. It's not perfect, but it's charming as hell and has the best mobility I've ever seen in a 2D game. One of the few games I have ever bought the soundtrack for.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (2019, Switch): Again, good but not great. I don't actually remember it much. It sure didn't wow me. I love the original, and I think this is an acceptable replacement, but A Link Between Worlds is a better game.
Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (Switch): Love it. Y'all don't need me to sing its praises. It has such respect within the genre for a reason.
Old School Musical (PC): A really charming comedy/rhythm game that I wasn't expecting to like anywhere near as much as I did. It takes all kinds of potshots at gaming nostalgia, and while normally that well is dry as hell for me, it worked here. I'll forever think of headcrabs as potatoes.
APRIL
Cayne (PC) and Stasis (PC): The first is a free game that somewhat serves as a demo for the second. Horror point-and-click adventure games set in a space ship where of bad things happening. Notable for their strong Starcraft-cinematic aesthetic, but otherwise forgettable.
Scanner Sombre (PC): I had really high hopes for this one, and it completely let me down. I love caves, and this managed to make them mundane. It's not bad, but it could have been so much more.
The Turing Test (PC): One of the best things I played all year, that recaptured the delight of Portal for me in ways that other imitators completely failed to. Would strongly recommend.
Frog Detective 1: The Haunted Island (PC) and Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard (PC): Half-hour-long comedy detective games. Big recommend.
Subsurface Circular (Switch): I love this game to bits. It's a detective game where all the characters are robots, and where you spend almost the entire game sitting on the subway, talking to them. The only mechanics are dialogue, and the writing is masterful.
MAY
Streets of Rage 4 (PC): This was my game of the year for most of the year, until something better came along at the end. It's absolutely perfect. The gameplay and art design and music all come together to make something better than I could have ever imagined. Big, big recommend. 10/10.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS): A great game buried by repetition. If you cut 60% of the content, it'd be fabulous.
Quarantine Circular (Switch): Despite how much I loved Subsurface, this just didn't land for me.
Deltarune: Chapter 1 (Switch): I've avoided the Undertale phenomenon until now, but this was free and I was in an extremely Chrono Trigger mood. Loved it, well worth my time.
198X (PC): Absolutely loved it. One of the best things I played this year. Criminally short, but succeeds like nothing else in making the past feel like how you remember it instead of like it was.
The Touryst (Switch): Really fun! A unique experience I recommend to everyone with a Switch who likes exploration and doesn't mind a beach aesthetic.
Katawa Shoujo (PC): Finally came back to this after it emotionally destroyed me many years ago and finished the remaining routes. Some were sub-par, others floored me. It was good to get closure here.
Virtue's Last Reward (PS4, The Nonary Games): One of the best games of its type. Loved every second of it. My only problem is that pretty much the entire premise of the game is to set up its sequel, it can't really stand on its own. Even given that, I'd strongly recommend it.
Arise: A Simple Story (PS4): An extremely mediocre experience.
Zero Time Dilemma (PS4): An abject disappointment. If I could delete it from my brain, I would.
Dandara: Trials of Fear (Switch): I played the base game last year and it was one of my favorite games of all time then. I replayed it, as the free DLC upgrade is very significant and integrated into the main game, and fell in love all over again. The additional content gave me one of the most powerful experiences in gaming I ever had, as I explored the vast new cave systems in the new area, barren and eerie, resources scarce and eyes staring at me dispassionately, barely responding to any attack but always tilting to follow me through the depths...
JUNE
Terranigma (SNES): As a huge fan of Illusion of Gaia from childhood, I was surprised by how much I didn't like this. Unlike Gaia, the gameplay gets incredibly stale. It's one of the most ambitious games ever made in terms of story and world design and overall structure, but the gameplay can't cash the cheque the setting wrote.
The Room (PC), The Room Two (PC), and The Room Three (PC): Great puzzle games with Lovecraftian undertones! Big recommend if you like puzzles and want to kill some time.
SOMA (PC): I played on the casual nothing-can-hurt-you mode and just enjoyed the story. It's a good story! Great to see a game take on these themes and actually do them justice.
Alan Wake (PC): This is the most obscenely overhyped game I've ever experienced. People have been telling me to play it for years and I finally get to it and it's the most abssolutely bog-standard Xbox 360 era third-person shooter, where enemies constantly spawn behind me and kill me, and the plot is exactly as bad as Devil May Cry 1. What? Who thought this was good? Why?
JULY
Blaster Master Zero (Switch) and Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch): BMZ1 was a huge disappointment but BMZ2 fixed almost every problem I had with it. Not sure if I'd recommend, but I had plenty of fun with it in the end.
AUGUST
What The Golf? (Switch): Another great comedy game! Good fun.
Yakuza 3 Remastered (PS4): This is a low point in the series but I still found a lot to enjoy in it. My weird play order is because I got the PS3 digital versions of 4 and 5 before the remastered collection came out -- 60FPS definitely improves things, 5 really struggled to run on the older hardware. 0's next and it's gonna be great.
SEPTEMBER
Remember Me (PS3): What a weird game. The combat's nothing special, in fact actively painful with overtutorializing early on, but there's not much gameplay to it. It gets out of the way and makes room for the story and presentation, which is great. A glorified walking simulator with bad Arkham combat tacked on, but one worth going back for.
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (DS): Exactly as you'd expect. My only complaints relate to the absurdity of the plot, which I won't get into to avoid spoilers.
Journey to the Savage Planet (PS4): Metroid Prime if dipped in absurd 80s-sci-fi corporate dystopia and giant googly eyes. Not perfect, but a great ride.
OCTOBER
House of Da Vinci (PC) and House of Da Vinci II (PC): Carbon copies of The Room but with a different setting. The first isn't great, the second retroactively encapsulates it in story and is a much better experience. Waiting eagerly for the third.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (PS4): This felt very barebones, but in ways that are setting-appropriate and mostly lended to immersion. If you want a simple detective game without a ton of cinematic bells and whistles, this is for you.
Undertale (Switch): After years of dodging it, I went there. I did a true Pacifist run. It lived up to the hype and I shouldn't have dodged it for so long.
Owlboy (Switch): Bounced off this one a year or so ago and gave it another chance. Ended up being really, really good. Delivered in all sorts of ways. I'm incredibly glad I played it.
Inmost (Switch): Good pixel art horror, of the kind I actually enjoy! It's pretty short, but I recommend it.
Momodora II (PC): Free game from the series that later gave us Reverie Under the Moonlight. It's a short Metroidvania completeable in one sitting. It's pretty decent.
NOVEMBER
Trauma Team (Wii): A hugely underrated game that's around 40% traditional Trauma Center gameplay and 60% things more at home in the investigation phase of a Phoenix Wright game. A true hidden gem, if anime doctor detective nonsense sounds at all appealing.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS): The first JRPG I've completed in a while. I like them, they're just imposing. Dragon Quest is a lot more to my taste than the retro Final Fantasies I've played -- the combat is really snappy, and that combined with the enemy designs makes things I'd normally be annoyed by become enjoyable, in the same Zen way that retro Pokemon did. It feels old in some ways, but it's a NES game jazzed up to more modern standards. I'm really looking forward to playing later installments.
Iconoclasts (Switch): Good but not great. The number of times the story railroaded me out of exploration I wanted to do was really frustrating, even though I enjoyed the story. I'd still recommend it, but I was expecting better.
DECEMBER
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (PS4): This is my game of the year, and I think the only thing on this list that came out in the last six months. While I had moments where I hated it, and I would rate it lower than other things on this list, I spent over 100 hours with it trying to complete it, and a whole lot of that time was just so enjoyable because of how precise and well-designed the platforming mechanics are. There are some glaring issues in terms of difficulty, repetition, and a few specific segments that control like ass, but all in all the good outweighs the bad to the point that it even elevates it above much shorter experiences I would rate higher. Haven't had a game like this for a long time, and well, it was due.
Just Shapes & Beats (Switch): A delightful little rhythm game with more of a story than I expected despite having no dialogue whatsoever. Strong recommend.
MediEvil (2019, PS4): This game was bad, but charming? It frustrated me most of the time I was playing it, but I'm glad I played it, and I never contemplated giving it up.
TOP FIVE
OVERALL THOUGHTS
2020 was more remarkable for what I didn't play than what I did. There are very few modern AAA games on here, and a number of things I gave up on before completing. In the last couple of weeks of the year, I purged over 40 games from my Steam backlog, along with several others on console. I got around 25% into Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, but I'm not going to finish it or play anything else in the series. I finished the first episode of Life is Strange 2, but I'll pass on the rest. I'm never going to go back and try to play Elder Scrolls or Fallout 3. I'm giving up on horror pretty much entirely as a genre, and sold my unplayed copies of recent Resident Evil games.
Mainly, I'm trying to silence the FOMO in my brain, ditch the borderline titles, and get to the mountain of crap in my backlog I know I'll love. And it's working! Started several AAA games over the holidays, including Spider-Man PS4 and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, and I'm having a blast. My goal is for 2021 to have more good big-budget titles and less sub-par weirdness.

Yakuza on the Xbox, what's next?

Hi, I have become a big fan of the yakuza games, and I have only been able to play 0, kiwami 1, and kiwami 2 since I only have them for xbox. im new to this subreddit, and just have a question, since I dont see people talking or asking about it.
Does anyone have any idea when either yakuza 3, or even the remastered collection is coming to the xbox?
I understand that covid is a factor in everything, and im sure now that since like a dragon just came out, getting the older games isn't as much of a priority.
But as a new fan, I'd personally love to play 0 through 6 before playing like a dragon.
If anyone has any news or anything on this, i'd love to know. Thanks!

How can a game franchise be this perfect? (Slight K2 spoiler)

Just wanted to say i admire the Yakuza franchise so much everything is just so good I can't think of a single flaw this franchise deserve countless praises, i finished Kiwami 2 right now and as an xbox player this was supposed to be my last yakuza game but in the game awards they announced the remastered collection and 6 coming to xbox game pass and i was filled with joy such joy that only marriage would top that joy, so about the the spoiler it's about when Majima defused the bomb, his instincts apparently didn't fail him but that moment his worker cut off the wire a bomb went kaboom so what was that bomb?

2020 Year in Review and 2021 List/Goals

Year in Review

My post history will reveal that I made a starting thread back in 2019 that never got a follow up because as it turns out I could only manage 6 completed games that year, and only 2 of them were actually from my original list.
Obviously because of the pandemic I’ve had a lot more free time on my hands, so since March 2020 I’ve blazed through a whopping 23 games – more than I’ve completed in the past 4 years combined. Though instead of focusing my efforts on culling my backlog, a lot of the games I finished this year were new releases/purchases. Earlier in March/April I assumed probably like many people that coronavirus would go away in a matter of months and we’d return to the office (and my long commute) in short order, so I wanted to relish the extra free time while I had it by playing some new games (such as Final Fantasy VII Remake).
However, it seems like I'll be continuing to telework into the future, so for 2021, I’d like to refocus my efforts on clearing my backlog (and ultimately buying fewer games – especially major new releases).
2020 Completed Games
Total Complete: 23
Total New Games Added to Collection: 43

My Thoughts and Progress

Favourite Game (Overall): Life Is Strange 2
This may be surprising, but yes, LIS2 was my favourite game this year! Unfortunately I don't hear much buzz about this game and it's weirdly polarising, even to those who have yet to play it. It's about two brothers who are on the run from the law after the youngest's then-undiscovered powers result in the accidental death of an officer. As the older brother, you have to make choices to protect and guide your loose canon of a sibling from Seattle to the border of Mexico. It's a dire scenario, yes, but because the narrative is framed as more of a road trip than a thrilling escape from the authorities, I found this game to be oddly comforting, especially during these (corona) times. Because the brothers keep a low profile, they're often in nature and visit real locations that this game creates its own gorgeous rendition of (Mount Rainier and the Arizonan canyons in particular were my favourite), and the game also sheds light on alternate lifestyles (living on the road, in communes, train hoppers, etc) that often aren't explored in video games. There are no real good endings to LIS2 where all the characters get to walk away unscathed, but after this playing this, it stayed in my mind and made me feel inspired in a way that no other game I've played this year has.
Runner Up: Hollow Knight - Because my progress with this game has stretched out over years, it almost doesn't feel like "a game I beat in 2020." It also doesn't feel finite. It's a game I'll continue to pull out every now and then to discover new things and find new challenges.

Favourite 2020 Release: Hades
Surprising no one, Hades has to be my GOTY for 2020. Supergiant is a master at turning genres I normally hate into games I love. I've been taking it at my own pace, but I'm hoping it's something I come back to regularly in the future.

Least Favourite Game (Overall): Borderlands 3
I'm not too keen on looter shooters, so it's probably through no fault of the game itself. There was one particularly cool cameo, but otherwise, I don't have much good to say.

Biggest Disappointment: Control
All style, lots of padding, but no substance. Everything that happens in this game leads up to a... big flat nothing. Like, come on! The world, the setting, and the visuals were on point, but the story was aimless and anticlimactic. Literally nothing changes from the beginning to the end of the game, and it feels like you made no impact on the world and its characters whatsoever.

Biggest Surprise: Resident Evil 3 Remake
I may not have liked Resident Evil 2 Remake... Like. At all. One of the main reasons being how sluggish the controls were. I know we're supposed to tolerate subpar movement/combat mechanics for horror games because it makes them "more tense," but for the love of God, getting constantly bowled down because your character has the same level of dexterity as your grandma was simply not fun for me. Especially when the zombies of all things can bob and weave out of your crosshair better than Mike Tyson. Well, RE3R addresses that problem by adding a dodge button. Turns out, that small addition is all that was needed for a much smoother experience.

Most Unique Gameplay: Return of the Obra Dinn
It's hard to believe this game was created by a one-man team, not only because it's so damn polished in every respect, but because the "whodunit" structure of the game is so intricate and well-thought out. Every single character's fate can be determined from tangible clues if you're observant enough, and not just via guesswork (though the game acknowledges that guessing is a perfectly valid way to determine the fates).

Best Hidden Gem: Song of Horror
Or is it? I do love my horror games, but it seems like I've fallen out of touch with the genre. Either way, it doesn't seem like many people are aware this game exists. If you're sick of the modern horror game template, Song of Horror is a throwback to when the genre felt a little more experimental. Rather than throwing jumpscare after jumpscare at you, Song of Horror keeps you on edge with a mix of a perma-death system, choice-based scenarios that can lead to your demise or be your saving grace, and the placement of "illusions" to trick the player into walking into their own deathtrap. It's unsettling and a lot of fun, but it loses some points for having some broken/obtuse puzzles.

Favourite Boss Fight: T-073-M (Ghostrunner)
If it can even be called that? It's more a challenging platforming section that has you avoiding lasers and lethal electrical pulses as you zip and wall climb up to the top of a rotating machine. It was a fun sensory overload and easily one of the most memorable gaming moments I've had this year.

Final Notes:

2021 List and Goals

I don't think having a set monthly list works for me, so I'm just going to drop a list of games from my backlog I'd like to clear in 2021 and refer back to throughout the year.
Started but incomplete:
Unplayed:
So that's 26 total games. I don't think I'll get through my entire list, but I'm aiming to complete a similar number of games.
Other loose goals:

So that's it! Happy new year and good luck for 2021!

[USA] [H] Nintendo - Games, Consoles, Collectibles; PlayStation - Games & Consoles; Xbox - Games & Accessories; Dreamcast - Games & Accessories; New swap items at the top of the list [W] Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4); Luigi's Mansion (3DS - CASE ONLY)

Bundles take priority. I'd love to get rid of this stuff.
New Stuff
• Nintendo Switch - Brand new. New model with neon red/blue Joycons. Includes a code in the box for MarioKart 8 Deluxe & 3 month subscription to Switch Online service.
• PlayStation 4 - 500GB console, not slim. It's the one that came with The Last of Us bundle. Comes with the original box, DS4 controller (left stick needs rubber replaced), power cord. I can throw in an HDMI cable & micro USB as well if needed. I also have an additional black DS4 (also needs that rubber replaced), a 2-controller charging dock, and the following games (all with case except for The Witcher III): Uncharted Collection; MX vs ATV All Out; Monster Energy Supercross 3; God Of War; The Last of Us Remastered; Crash N-Sane Trilogy; Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Infinite Warfare (GameStop case), Advanced Warfare, World War II; The Witcher III
• I have 2 Gibson Xplorer Guitar Hero guitars for Xbox with 1 USB breakaway cable, as well as the dualpack of Guitar Hero 2/Guitar Hero Aerosmith for Xbox 360.
• Silver DS Lite - I replaced the inner top housing that has the plastic hinge that's prone to breaking. It works great now aside from the green "on" indicator, the charging light works so I'm not sure if that diode went out or something, but I really don't think it's valuable enough to look into replacing.
Nintendo Collectibles
Title Condition Notes
Paper Mario: The Origami King Origami Set Sealed They are these ones
Super Mario 3D All-Stars Poster Set New They are these ones
Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Pin Set #1 Sealed They are these ones
Super Mario Zipper Case New It's this one

Title Condition Notes
Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout Sealed Picked up an extra copy to keep sealed during the recent restocks. Figure if someone else will open & play it, might be a good token to trade.
Ys VIII Cart & Case Only Adventurer's Edition, however it doesn't have any of the inserts. Just the case and the cartridge.
Nintendo Wii/U
Title Condition Notes
Console WiiU Used Black 32GB console. Very nice shape. Includes the OEM power supply & sensor bar, gamepad (in excellent condition -- no stylus or original charging brick, but it will come with a USB-to-gamepad cable. It doesn't work nearly as well at charging the gamepad, I'd recommend picking up an OEM charging brick/cradle if you don't already have one).
Console Wii RVL-101 Used Black console. Later model that doesn't have GC controller ports or back compatibility. Comes with all OEM hookups. Tested & works great. I'm happy to softmod it too, if you'd like.
WiiMote Accessory 3 OEM Wiimotes - 2 white (one original, one with Motion+ built in), and one black (has Motion+ built in). The two white Wiimotes have wrist straps, and each seems to have at least some minor little puppy bite marks (?). One of the white ones has a silicone sleeve, and the non-M+ one has a black silicone sleeve with the M+ adapter. They're all tested and work great.
Birthday Party Bash Loose Tested, reads at least past the title screen. Can't say I've done any more birthday party bashing after that.
Just Dance 3 (Wii) CIB Nice shape
Just Dance 4 CIB Nice shape
Just Dance 2016 CIB Nice shape
Nintendo (3)DS
Title Condition Notes
Console Silver DS Lite Used Terrific shape, hinge in tact, no visible scratches. Bottom screen has a protector on it, even. Includes the original stylus and GBA slot cover, as well as all of the original paperwork.
Console Black DS Lite Used Nice overall condition, bottom screen has some scratches that I've tried to capture in the pictures. Comes with OEM charger. Pics
Console Zelda Edition DS Lite Refurbished Nice overall condition, the top hinge was cracked so I had to replace the top housing, but everything else is original. I'll include the original top housing if you want it, too. Pics
Console Parts DS Lite FPNW This is a bag of leftovers from a couple of housing swaps. Bad top casings, cracked top LCD, broken power slider. Surprisingly, the other things all work great on one of them. Lots of decent parts to harvest. Battery, cartridge reader, metal hinge, bottom housing, bottom screen, etc. Pics.
